Morning Potomac flow and demand update (Wednesday, 2023-08-30)

According to National Weather Service predictions, no rainfall is expected over the next 7 days.

At 3 P.M. yesterday, Washington Aqueduct initiated a proactive load shift of 65 MGD to the Little Falls intake to increase Potomac flow between Great Falls and Little Falls. The recently observed, significant flow fluctuations at Point of Rocks related to hydroelectric dam operations have stabilized. We believe that hydro-dam impacts on flow at Little Flows will not be significant over the next few days.

ICPRB estimates that sedimentation has resulted in a loss of total available storage in Jennings Randolph Reservoir of 1.6 BG in recent years, and this loss is not reflected in the numbers above.

Note: Flow levels have dropped to a level that has triggered enhanced monitoring, per the drought operations manual of the Water Supply Coordination Agreement. When adjusted flow at Little Falls (adjusted flow is gage flow plus upstream withdrawals) less the environmental flow is less than twice the Washington metropolitan area withdrawals, the water suppliers will begin reporting yesterday's and today's withdrawals and this morning's reservoir storage volumes.
