Daily Potomac flow and demand update (Wednesday, 2025-09-17)

Situational Awareness (Wednesday, 2025-09-17):
Yesterday, 0 to 1.5 inches of precipitation fell across the region, leading to some increases in stream flows today. The Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center projects an additional 0.1 to 0.75 inches of precipitation over the next 24 to 72 hours.

Special Conditions:
The third and final whitewater release from Savage River Dam for 2025 is scheduled for Saturday, September 27th. The release is scheduled to be 1,000 cfs from 10am to 4pm.  Times for ramping and post-event flows will be posted on the North Branch Potomac release website (link below) closer to the event.  The link to the North Branch releases on this new site can be found at: https://water.usace.army.mil/office/nab/nbrelease.

Little Falls gage flow 2025-09-16: 840 MGD (1300 cfs)
Little Falls gage flow 2025-09-17: 1034 MGD (est., based on recently available real-time data) (1600 cfs)
Note: Gage flow at Little Falls is measured after water supply withdrawals.
Point of Rocks flow 2025-09-16: 911 MGD (1410 cfs)
Point of Rocks flow 2025-09-17: 1099 MGD (est., based on recently available real-time data) (1700 cfs)

Note: Potomac River flow at Point of Rocks has dropped below the low-flow threshold of 2,000 cfs. When this occurs, per the Water Supply Coordination Agreement of 1982, CO-OP begins daily monitoring and reporting of Potomac flows and withdrawals on behalf of the CO-OP suppliers, Fairfax Water, Washington Aqueduct, and WSSC Water.
